Leadership By Example: A TY4YK Board Member’s Contribution

Today we were honored by an incredible act of generosity from within our own board. TY4YK’s Secretary& Treasurer made a significant personal donation to support our mission and help us move closer to launching Project 1×1.

Why Board Giving Matters in Nonprofits

Behind every effective nonprofit organization is a board of directors that believes deeply in the mission it serves. Board members provide guidance, accountability, and leadership, but one of the most meaningful ways they demonstrate their commitment is through personal giving.

Board giving is important because it signals something powerful: those who are closest to the organization’s work believe in it enough to invest in it themselves.

When board members contribute financially, they are doing more than making a donation. They are affirming that the mission matters and that the work deserves to grow. Their support helps create stability for the organization and strengthens its ability to serve the community.

Board giving also builds trust. Donors, partners, and grantmakers often look first to the board to see whether its members are personally invested in the organization’s success. When board members give, it shows that the leadership stands fully behind the work being done.

Just as importantly, board giving reinforces a culture of shared responsibility. Nonprofits thrive when everyone involved (staff, volunteers, leadership, and supporters) plays a role in sustaining the mission. Board members help set that tone by modeling generosity and commitment.

At its heart, board giving is not about the size of the gift. It is about participation, belief, and leadership. When those entrusted with guiding an organization also choose to support it personally, they help build the foundation for lasting impact.

In the nonprofit world, leadership is not only about governance. It is about example.
